History of Green Tea
The history
of green tea started in China and the origin is surrounded
by myths and legends. One of the earliest stories was dated as
far back as 5000 years ago!
the legend states that a
man, known as Shien Non Shei discovered a plant and decided to
taste it. After tasting the tea leaf, he thought it tasted good
and the idea of mixing it with water came to him.
Another popular belief
reveals that an Emperor, Shen Nung, who was also a medical
expert, was the one that discovered green tea. One day while he
was boiling water, a leaf fell into the cup and after drinking
it, thought that it tasted good and decided that it has healing
power.
From then on, the history
of green tea began to develop. Green tea was only popular
within the rich and powerful because tea was considered a
luxury in ancient China. Only after the fall of the Mongolian
empire, tea drinking spread among the whole population of
China.
During the time when
China was dominating the sea, tea was part of the compulsory
provisions given to all sailors. The nutrients in the tea
leaves were enough to prevent the sailors from getting scurvy,
which would kill many European sailors in the
future.
In time, green tea made
it way to Japan and from there, the Japanese developed new
variations of teas. The history of green tea continued after a
Portuguese missionary introduced it to European counties. After
that, the Dutch East India Company launched a ludicrous trade
of tea shipping from China to Europe.
Tea drinking was only
introduced to USA by Europe as part of the global tea trade and
also from the Chinese restaurants run by Chinese
immigrants.
The history of green tea
accounts how a simple leaf became the second most popular drink
of choice, behind water, in the world.
Although green tea is
widely available in the world, and comes in different
packaging, quality of each brand differs depending on where is
it grown and the processing methods.
